Tired of dancing to the hip-hop Top Forty? Want to chill with people who take ‘well-dressed’ to a whole new level? Interested in taking on a foreign lover?
Good news: After a summer hiatus, the notoriously good-looking Italian man duo behind Made In Italy NYC are again hosting Friday nights at Room Service. Translation: You don’t need fly across the Atlantic anymore to party it up Euro-style.
Leave any of your preconceived notions about Room Service at home as the Made in Italy boys could turn a warehouse in Queens into the chicest soiree in the city. Location is irrelevant. It’s Made in Italy’s massive guest list of internationals, top sponsors like Byblos, Peroni and Lamborghini, and DJs flown in from Italy that give these parties an unparalleled energy. Ensuring that jet-setting Euro ex-pats enjoy themselves in Manhattan has been Made in Italy’s mission since its inception in 2003. And as we approach 2008, I think they’ve mastered the formula.
The music is house and the scene is work-hard play-hard professionals, mostly foreign, so don’t be surprised to stumble across non-English conversations. Door preference is given to regulars, women, and mixed groups, but unlike the anally exclusive French Tuesday society, whose parties often feel like a stuffy cocktail hour, Made in Italy has no formal ‘membership.’ Italians have historically been more laid back than the French, so if you waltz up to the red rope in Gucci and toss out some ciaos, chances are you’ll be enthusiastically welcomed Mediterranean style.
Made in Italy bring their own lights, scantily clad dancers and decorations to the party, adding to Room Service’s already upscale décor. I’ve always appreciated Room Service if only for the fact that it’s not on the 27th street strip. The club provides a needed physical and mental break from the Chelsea mobs. So while technically you’re still clubbing, at Room Service you don’t feel as guilty since you didn’t enter the disco-fever Hell around Pink Elephant, Cain, and Marquee. Another plus about Room Service is its convenient proximity to Tens, so if you need fifteen minutes away from men with geled hair and really pointy shoes, you can swing a building over and shake your thang with strippers.
This past Friday, I forced my usually high expectations for a fun-filled evening down a notch, figuring most people would be away for the long weekend. Imagine my surprise when I rounded 21st street at 12:45 (almost an hour earlier than I normally go) and found the door a jungle-style madhouse. It wasn’t even 1 am! When I walked inside the party wasn’t just in full fledge, the place felt like it was overcapacity. The word on how delightfully fun Made in Italy’s Guido-chic parties are has definitely spread since last spring. That or there’s been an influx of Europeans who are actually flying into New York to experience the best Euro house party in the world.
If you want to check it out, I suggest going before 12 to get past the ropes early. And remember not to order Stella or Corona at the bar. Grab a Peroni, fake an accent and you’ll blend right in.
